About the event
A summer of fun or just a week... here some addtional information...
Weekly Sports Camp - Morning (Baseball, Football, Basketball, and more)
Career Trade & Career Speakers - Afternoon
Once a week, career trade vendors will visit the camp to introduce children to various trades, aiming to broaden their horizons and inspire interest in different career paths. Each session will commence with a verbal dialogue where the vendor shares insights, experiences, and expertise in their respective trade. Following this, visual instruction will be provided to demonstrate the practical aspects and techniques involved in the trade, allowing the children to gain a hands-on understanding.
Our goal is to expose the campers to a diverse range of trades, including chef/baker, photographer/videographer, jewelry maker, financial adviser, and IT professional (coder). Additionally, a barber/stylist will visit once a week to provide instruction on the skills and techniques involved in the haircare and styling profession. By offering exposure to these trades, we aim to ignite curiosity, spark creativity, and encourage exploration of potential career paths among the campers. We will also have career days which professionals will speak for a few mintutes about their job then answer questions from the children.
Community Service Day
Every Friday (day can vary), the campers will have the opportunity to engage with the Turner Station community by participating in a meaningful community activity. This activity could involve various initiatives such as cleaning up a local park to enhance its beauty and accessibility for all residents, planting or maintaining vegetables in the community garden to promote sustainability and healthy living and engaging in recreational games at the senior center to build intergenerational connections (may even have senior pen pal) and foster a sense of community unity.
Sports Speakers
Our sports speakers are former athletes who have excelled in their respective sports at various levels, including college, professional, semi-pro, and/or overseas competitions. They will share their career journeys in a 15-20 minute speaking session, highlighting the highs and lows of their experiences to resonate with children aspiring to pursue a similar career path. This will be followed by a 30-minute Q&A session where campers can ask questions. The session will conclude with a group photo with the speaker. Our goal is to have them speak every Wednesday during lunch or in the afternoon.
All-Star Day
At All-Star Day (Friday Mornings), campers will participate in various All-Star activities on things they learned during the week that is specific to a chosen sport that week. The winner of each all-star evet will receive a certificate at the conclusion of the event. These activities may include a home run derby, fastest 60-yard dash, 3 point, layups, fastest dribbling drill, and throwing accuracy challenges.
